What Happens When We Create Spaces Where People Can Truly Heal?
There is magic that happens when people feel safe.
The kind of magic that slowly changes lives.
It looks like someone smiling for the first time in months.
Someone who has spent years living in survival taking a deep breath without realising they were holding it.
Someone discovering that they are not broken, not failing, not alone.
This is the work of Wilderness Wellbeing.
Over the past year I’ve had the privilege of being part of the team, supporting people through Integral Eye Movement Therapy (IEMT), sharing my own lived experience of chronic illness and recovery, and witnessing first-hand what becomes possible when people are offered compassionate, trauma-informed support in nature and in community.
When I speak at conferences or campaign for better recognition of the relationship between chronic stress, trauma and long-term health, I often return to the same message.
Healing begins when we feel safe.
Safe enough to breathe, to be seen and safe enough to believe that change is possible.
That is exactly what Wilderness Wellbeing creates.
Connection returns.
Hope returns.
People begin to remember who they are beneath years of stress, illness, grief or trauma.
As part of the team, I have had the privilege of offering IEMT to people carrying emotional burdens that words alone could never fully express.
One of the most beautiful aspects of this work is that it doesn’t require someone to relive every detail of their past. Instead, I often witness memories lose their emotional grip, shoulders soften, breathing deepen and confidence quietly return. These moments are never about erasing the past.
They are about helping people move forward without the past continuing to define every step.
But IEMT is only one part of the story.
Wilderness Wellbeing brings together nature, movement, peer support, therapeutic interventions, education and community. It recognises something many of us instinctively know but modern research increasingly supports: healing happens more easily when we feel connected—to ourselves, to others and to the natural world.
The newly published Impact Report captures this beautifully.
Behind every statistic is a person.
Someone rediscovering purpose.
Someone living with anxiety finding moments of peace.
Someone who felt isolated discovering they belong.
Someone taking the first steps towards a healthier future.
As a lived experience campaigner, this work means more to me than I can easily put into words. I know what it feels like to live in a body that seems to have turned against you. I also know what becomes possible when people are offered compassion instead of judgement, curiosity instead of criticism and community instead of isolation.
That is why I believe so strongly in Wilderness Wellbeing.
Today, the charity is working hard to secure its future so that these life-changing opportunities remain available to those who need them most.
If this story resonates with you, I would love to ask one small favour.
Please take a few minutes to read the Impact Report.
Learn about the people whose lives have been changed. If it moves you, share it with someone else.
If you’re in a position to do so, please consider making a donation. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps create more opportunities for people to reconnect with themselves, with nature and with hope.
Perhaps you’ve been thinking about attending one of our wellbeing walks, retreats or events. There has never been a better time. By joining us, you’re not only investing in your own wellbeing, you’re also helping to sustain a community that exists to support others.
And if you’re part of a business or organisation looking to make a meaningful social impact, we’d love to explore how we can work together through sponsorship, partnerships or corporate wellbeing initiatives.
This work matters.
Not because it promises quick fixes. But because it reminds people that they don’t have to face life’s challenges alone.
Thank you to every volunteer, every participant, every supporter and every person who has trusted Wilderness Wellbeing with a part of their story.
