Dis-ease and the path to growth...
The reasons I got into the wellness industry are many, but like many people in the field it was fuelled by my own story with illness.
I have embarked on a another level of healing this year in my own life and this Autumn will be stepping into The Root Cause Practice Internship Programme.
The path for my own life is an insatiable appetite for learning and understanding our bodies and how they work at every level.
We have been conditioned to step away from ourselves as whole beings and have been taught to cut off the mind body connection.
Learning to connect them again was the starting point of my own journey and it's how I support my clients now.
My story is of illness but also of self-discovery, of reconnection and of restoration of my body, mind and Spirit in a wholistic way. No quick fixes on the road to wholistic health.
When I reflect, each time I found a new regime, diet or protocol. I thought I had the 'answer'.
Yoga. AIP protocol. Weights. Gut health. Each tool gave me so much, but I still got symptoms and I still felt rotten.
I was still a nervous wreck. I pushed myself hard, I was stressed out beyond belief. My mind was in anxious overdrive, I held beliefs of being not good enough and undeserving.
Each pillar of learning and health helped me take steps forward but I was building my health on sand. Each time a period of stress came (which was often) it wiped me out until my body told me to stop. I was frazzled and burned out.
The amazing Tracey Stevens from The Root Cause Practice says this of autoimmune disease.
"There has been much drama and conflict in your life. You have had to defend yourself constantly. Now, the battle has moved inside.
Conflict, drama and trauma are likely to have dominated your life if you have an autoimmune disease. The nervous system has needed to be on high alert all the time, because you never quite knew when the next explosion, drama or threat was coming so it was hard to rest or maybe even impossible to deeply sleep.
In this situation there is no chance for the body to do its repair or regeneration work at night.
There may have been a sense of always feeling under attack, criticized, judged or demeaned. It’s very confusing to receive a diet of negativity and emotional drama mixed with love and care, all from the same family members. This leads to difficulties with personal boundaries and trust. In this environment there was no room for growth or expression, only suppression.
You learned to hold in your feelings and looking after others may have been the way you were able to receive the love and validation you really needed. Auto immune issues are the physical manifestation of this confusion and conflict. The need to always defend yourself, to always be ready for the next blow. Outside battles become inside battles.
The tendency is to treat the disease in the same way you have learned to react to other difficult people in your life. With defence, anger or fear.
The disease becomes the next ‘thing’ you have to battle or cope with.
It feels never-ending. The irony is that radical acceptance is the path to healing.
The dis-ease is the teacher, leading you to find peace within.
This is a long and difficult journey, and for some it may be a life’s work."
Learning to work with my body, to understand it was guiding me rather than stopping me moving forward was the way I got into remission. The constant fight and battle had to cease fire and surrender.
What I notice the most in my 1:1 client work is people have lots of good information but no discernment about what is right for them.
At the beginning of each journey there is lots of confusion and chaos. It takes a little time to unpick the threads of what lies underneath. The root cause.
From that point we can start to understand the past issues, to bring that understanding into the present and to guide our future health but also our whole lives.
I took my body from worn out to a more energised and healthy form. Mentally, emotionally and physically.
I approach all my client work this way. Building on firmer foundations to enable them to feel more empowered and aligned with their true selves and to move forward effectively in their lives.
